Safety Tips for National Grilling Month
July is recognized as the National Grilling Month when family and friends gather together to enjoy a barbeque and good company. July is known for family reunions, celebrating Independence Day and lots and lots of food. Picnics and family barbeques are always in the works and it’s also a good time to think about grilling safety.
With any outdoor activity there are risks involved, so it important to know how to be safe. Below are some helpful safety tips to keep your grilling parties safe and ensure nothing goes wrong at the grill.
1. Have a fire extinguisher
Knowing where the fire extinguisher is at all time and then learning how to use it could prevent huge problems from occurring. Every year grills cause thousands of fires for those who misjudged temperatures and didn’t keep things under control. To prevent damage, injury, or even death, call the local fire department and have a fire marshal show you how to operate a fire extinguisher. In the event of an emergency, you will be glad you did.
2. Safe food handling
With warm temperatures happening during the summer, food awaiting the grill can start to become affected by bacteria. Bacteria can grow on any food and at any temperature above freezing and remain alive until the food temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to keep items like fish and meats on ice until thrown on the grill. Never sit meat in the hot sun for hours or even minutes before grilling. The basic rule of thumb is to always be suspicious of the food and then grill it to the right temperature to kill any possible bacteria that could have formed.
3. Follow the instructions
More problems arise because the griller was ill-prepared when a problem arose and neglected to read the manual. In the owner’s manual, there are tips on safety and ranges of operation that should be abided by. Failure to read the manual and abide by the items in the instructions could cause problems and in the event of a fire, it is the griller’s fault. Also, don’t rely on your past knowledge. Not all grillers and smokers should be created equal. Specific instructions may be for one machine but not another. It is important to know the grill you are using inside and out in the event of a problem.
4. The proper location for the grill
Placing the grill in the right location can prevent fires and other problems. Each year hundreds of homes, garages, patios, and brush are caught on fire due to the improper placement of the grill. It is important to take a good look at your yard or patio and determine the placement of the grill safely. There should not be any buildings, trees or other items that can catch fire nearby. Also, you want to avoid placing the grill near children’s play areas or walkways where people will be walking by. Avoid the high traffic areas near the house.
